PLA Inside Out

Abstract

Desiree Joosten-ten Brinke and colleagues have conducted research examining different aspects of the quality of the assessment of prior learning (APL) process. These three articles looked at quality in the assessment procedures from different perspectives. The first article, "The Quality of Procedures to Assess and Credit Prior Learning: Implications for Design," analyzes the APL process from a quality assurance perspective and provides guidelines to consider. The second article, "Quality of Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) in University Programmes: Perceptions of Candidates, Tutors and Assessors," compares perceptions of the process from these stakeholders across two different disciplines. The third article, "Assessors’ Approaches to Portfolio Assessment in Assessment of Prior Learning Procedures," examines assessors’ approaches and criteria used to review and determine the assessment outcomes. These three pieces provide a lens into the assessment process and highlight some of the dynamics that impact the quality and results of APL.
