What Would You Do?

Abstract

The Question

The number, range and quality of organized courses, spaces to learn within and other so-called "learning opportunities" available on the Web are not only growing but paralleling, if not exceeding, the capacities, range and capabilities of institutionalized higher education. For those "learning opportunities" that already grant legitimized credit as a stamp of approval on assessed learning, we already have rules in place. But what should we be doing, if anything, to invite students' responsible conversion of the growth of so-called "unsponsored" learning to credit via a PLA/PLAR/RPL process? What processes and policies exist in our institutions to respond to students who come to us with such learning? What do we now do? What should we do?
